Michael Lee Davidson died at home after a brief but valiant fight against esophageal cancer on December 26, 2009. He was surrounded by family and friends and went peacefully to meet the Lord. Mike’s incredible sense of humor and love for people touched everyone who knew him and his absence has left a huge void in our hearts. He was born on August 6, 1949, in Evansville, Indiana, and spent most of his life in Memphis, Tennessee with roots in Marion, Kentucky. He is survived by his wife, Leslie Davidson; son, Michael Ray Davidson; daughter, Michelle Davidson Reed; stepdaughter, Ashley A. Bailey; and stepson, Mason V. Bailey. In addition, he is survived by his parents, Henrietta and Kenneth Davidson; brother and sister- in- law, Tony and Sheila Davidson; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bennie and Jerry Davidson. Mike had many out of town family who remained close to him. He served on the Memphis Police Department before retiring after 25 years of service. Beginning his career as a patrolman in 1970, Mike became a member of the first TACT unit in the department in 1976, then served as a Sergeant in the homicide, auto theft, and robbery bureaus. He was secretary for the Memphis Police Association and also became a reserve for several years. After leaving the force, he completed his undergraduate work at the University of Memphis and went on to receive a master’s degree in special education. Mike retired from the city school system with 14 years of service to children with mental and physical challenges. He had recently taken a teaching position at West Memphis Jr. High School. Police work and teaching were his passions; both allowed him to help others. Mike was a member of Highland Church of Christ. A celebration service will be held at White Station Church of Christ on January 9th, 1100 Colonial Road, with visitation from 1-2 p.m. and the service from 2- 3:30 p.m., with procession to the graveside to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105, so that a cure for cancer can be found.
